Farm to Fork Field Trip: Beef Slaughter Day Nov 1, 2012

Hanging meat

Slaughter Day 2011

This is my favorite field trip of all time. When we went last year for the first time my family thought it was fascinating and an incredibly educational event to see how a cow became beef. I strive to help my kids understand where our food comes from and often make them “work” for their food by picking it ourselves at Green Bluff farms and “work” in our own small garden. It was terrific for them to observe the slaughtering process of meat.

Time not yet determined.

The slaughterer will be at the beef farm at the end of October or early November. The slaughter process takes about 2 hours.

Where: A family beef farm in Chattaroy, WA

Description: A slaughterer is coming to Larry’s beef farm to prepare 2 cows for all cuts of beef. The slaughterer will shoot the animals and then drain the blood. Finally, he will cut them into large pieces of hanging meat which takes about 45 minutes per animal. He will then take the meat to his slaughterer shop and return the steaks, sausages, and ground beef to Larry about a week later.

Tour limit: none

Cost: Free

Age: All

Note: The slaughterer gives Larry a window of time when he will arrive. (Kind of like the cable guy, I guess.) As soon as Larry the time from the slaughterer, he will call me and let me know. Then I will contact those who have RSVPed to me and pass along the details. I’m sorry there isn’t more confirmed details but this is just the way slaughterers work.
